🌱 What killed these plants is brainwashing you too
and the sneaky habit you've probably never considered
It’s 3am.
A dark, stormy night in 1973.
Dorothy Retallack has only one thing on her mind:
“Could I kill a plant with Led Zeppelin?”
(okay so it may or may not have been stormy, and can’t confirm it was 3am. but roll with it…)
She let the intrusive thoughts win, and tried it.
More specifically, she organized an experiment:
One group of plants was played 3 hours of rock music per day
The second group of plants was played 3 hours of soothing music per day
Only 5 days in, she noticed clear differences between the two.
By two weeks in, the differences were drastic.
The plants jamming to soothing music were tall, healthy, and actually growing towards the speakers!
The rock-exposed plants were growing away from the speakers, and in the final stages of dying.
Literally dying!
Now before you pass out from astonishment, the MythBusters also tested this back in 2004. For them, while classical music did make plants healthier, ironically the plants listening to death metal were actually the healthiest of all.
Point is, they still proved a similar concept as Dorothy Retallack:
Music can directly impact the health of living things.
Sure, it’s plants in this case.
But would you really ague that music doesn’t affect people in similar ways?
Let’s walk through this logically.
Your experience with life is largely perceived from the average of all the emotions you feel day in and day out.
Music can be happy, sad, angry, silly, somber, intense, inspiring, etc.
If you regularly listen to music that tends to make you feel any one specific emotion, you’ll likely feel a lot of that emotion in your life.
If you feel a lot of that emotion in your life, you’re likely to perceive life as a whole through that emotion’s lens.
In other words, listen to lots of happy songs, and you’ll see and experience more happiness.
Lots of angry songs… you get the idea.
Not convinced?
Try it for a week.
Listen exclusively to songs that exude positivity.
Or, if you already tend toward that music, prove the point by doing the opposite.
Even for a day, listen exclusively to songs full of anger, rage, or sadness.
Take note of how you feel.
Oh, and have you ever actually read the lyrics of the songs you listen to?
You’re almost guaranteed to be surprised.
Either by simply realizing you’ve been singing the lyrics wrong for years…
…or shocked to find explicit language, innuendos, or other content you’d be embarrassed if your grandma found out you’d been listening to.
Listen to songs that talk about violence, have violent thoughts.
Listen to songs that talk about kindness, have kind thoughts.
Listen to songs about being determined and working hard for your dreams, notice that you feel more motivated than normal.
What you listen to matters.
How much of your life would change by simply changing your music?
