Last April, while visiting the Oregon Coast, my son wouldn’t stop complaining about his legs hurting.
Every time we walked on the beach or went on a hike, it was:
“dad, my legs hurt!”
“dad carry me!”
“dad I can’t walk anymore!”
Then while on a walk one night, it hit me.
Just when he started to complain about his legs again… I said:
“Hey dude, you know that feeling in your legs when you think you want to stop?
It feels like it hurts..
but what that feeling actually means is that your legs are getting stronger.”
Immediately he stopped complaining.
Then, later that night while walking back from the beach after flying kites…
All on his own, he suddenly said “dad… my legs are getting stronger!”
Talk about a proud dad moment!
He finally understood that discomfort doesn’t have to be discouraging.
That almost always, pain is actually progress.
Now instead of complaining his legs hurt, he just likes to show me his muscles.
How might a current pain in your life actually be a sign you’re getting better?
