Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie We Bought A Zoo tells the story of a single dad trying to connect with his kids and figure out life again after the passing of his beloved wife.
Spoiler alert: They buy a zoo!
But my favorite part of the whole movie is when he reenacts the moment he met their mother at a local diner.
The moment she catches his eye in the window, he stops dead in his tracks.
“That is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my entire life!”
Then he tells himself, “20 seconds of insane courage”, and pushes through the fear to approach her.
The full quote, later in the movie goes like this:
Sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage. Just, literally, twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it
Why?
Cause that’s all it takes.
To do anything.
You don’t have to know what’s going to happen next, just like DiCaprio’s character had no clue what he was gonna say to this gorgeous woman.
All he needed to do was take the first step and walk up to her, then the rest would follow.
Is there any first step in the world so daunting that it can’t be conquered with 20 seconds of insane courage?
Recently though, I’ve needed grit more than courage.
I’ve got bad habits.
I still battle the urge to whip out my phone when I’m bored, to snooze my alarm like I did this morning, or to have a second or third plate of food just cause it tastes good.
All vicious cycles.
But you know what I’ve noticed?
All it takes to interrupt that cycle is 20 seconds of insane grit.
Sometimes just 5 seconds.
Enough mental energy to put my phone back in my pocket, to get out of bed the second my alarm goes off, and to have a glass of water instead of more food.
It’s not easy, but the second that decision is made with conviction, it feels just a little easier.
Mark my words, it’s not easy - but it does get easier.
And as I’ve quoted many times before…
Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity.
